Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing that reduces stress, anxiety, and so much more. Many people have referred to Reiki as a "laying on of hands", though touch is actually unnecessary. Reiki can be done over long distances as well since it does not require physical touch (though light touch is commonly incorporated).
Reiki is comprised of two Japanese words, "Rei" and "Ki". While an exact translation is difficult, many describe "Rei" as divine wisdom, divine guidance, divine direction, divine knowing and "Ki" as the universal life force energy, the loving, unseen energy that surrounds and permeates everything living and non-living. Together they form the foundation of a healing practice which taps into this higher wisdom to channel energy through the practitioner to release blockages and heal dis-eases. This healing takes place on a mental, physical or spiritual level (often all three).

Before:
You will remain fully clothed for your session (except for your shoes), so make sure to wear comfortable clothing. Avoid heavy perfumes, jewelry, leather belts and constrictive clothing. Before receiving Reiki, your practitioner will explain what to expect during and after your session and will answer any questions you may have. Your practitioner will also ask for permission to incorporate light touch during the session. Don't worry if you prefer not to be touched, as it is not necessary in Reiki.
You will fill out a form with your basic health history and any specific issues or problems you would like addressed during the session (mental, physical or otherwise). You will also be given a consent form to sign. Most Reiki sessions last one hour, though they can be done for a shorter or longer period of time. For first time clients, at least an hour is recommended.
During:
During your Reiki session, you will either lay down on a massage table face up (which is most common) or sit in a chair (if laying down is uncomfortable). The practitioner will ensure you are at ease and then begin the session. All you need to do during your session is relax! Focusing on your breath is helpful, and sharing your thoughts and feelings is invited and encouraged, though not expected or necessary. Keep your eyes opened or closed (whatever feels natural to you).
Your practitioner will move around you using a variety of hand positions to channel the energy to different parts of your body. Often times stones will be placed on each of your body's main energy centers (also known as chakras) to facilitate deeper healing and relaxation. Essential oils are also commonly diffused in the treatment room, but only if you do not have a sensitivity. If you are laying down, you may be asked to flip over onto your stomach at a certain point during the session (uncommon for sessions that are under 2 hours). Often times the practitioner's hands will become hot, and you may feel warmth, tingling or similar sensations. It is not uncommon for people to have strong emotional reactions as well, such as weeping. This is encouraged! Reiki releases "stuck" energy, so this will show up in a way that is unique to you. Your Reiki practitioner may also receive other impressions or images during the treatment which you can have shared with you. Many people report a feeling of extreme relaxation, feeling "lighter" and having decreased or absent pain.
After:
After the Reiki session, you will be gently told by your Reiki practitioner that the session is now concluded. You will be encouraged to take your time sitting up and a glass of water will be offered. If you would like to discuss or reflect on the session you are more than free to share your experience and thoughts. They are always welcome! You are also encouraged to write them down. You will be asked if you would like to schedule another session and if you haven't prepaid payment will be collected (cash, credit cards, and checks are accepted. If you pay by cash, please bring exact cash).
Most people experience relief immediately from stress, though more chronic issues can take multiple sessions to address and release. After a session you are always encouraged to drink plenty of room temperature water to help flush out your system. You are also encouraged to pay careful attention to your thoughts, emotions and body. Many people experience an "aha" moment, pain relief and emotional releases during or within a week after their session. Within a week or so, your practitioner should check back in with you to see how you are doing and answer any questions that may have arisen since your session.
A minimum of 3 one hour sessions over 3 consecutive weeks is encouraged to give Reiki enough time to "show up" in your body and make a change that you are able to consciously notice and feel (though it is very common for the changes to be felt immediately). After the third week, the practitioner and client will reevaluate the effect of the sessions and establish an ongoing care plan. Typically clients will schedule sessions anywhere from twice a week to once a month (for maintenance). Chronic issues often require a greater length of time, though each person's struggles and needs are unique to them so the length and frequency of sessions will vary.
